An MBA at a high school high school in Asia is helping students of non-business descent to advance in their careers
Business because he spoke with two students about studying a MBA program at a high school school in Asia – and how they think they are taking advantage of their future career prospects.
Saurabh Singh’s background is in engineering and IT. He is currently registered in a part -time MBA while working as a senior technical manager at Hong Kong Jockey Club, one of Hong Kong’s largest employers. While he has seen progress in his career – he now manages a team of five – he wants to develop his strategy skills and gain a better understanding of the business world.
“My role has been very focused on the solution,” he says, “but if I want to get a leading role, for a day to become a leading technical official (CTO), I have to understand how other businesses work, how to develop strategies, how to be a good leader.”
Mi Jung Kim comes to her full-time MBA at the University of Hong Kong with six-year experience practicing the law in Sydney, Australia before joining the Hong Kong program. A work deployment for her husband meant a movement in the city and registering in an MBA was a great opportunity to develop her career in a new market.
What transferable business skills have you brought to MBA?
An HKU business school looks at basic business concepts such as accounting, economics and marketing, as well as financial analysis, digital innovation, competitive strategy, business ethics and leadership development. Both Mi Jung and Saurabh think they come to the program with transferable skills that help them in the curriculum.
Mi Jung says her ancestry as a transactional lawyer helped her prepare it: “Many of my clients were very business -oriented in terms of purchases, and I was commercially aware of what was happening in certain situations,” she says. “But I’ve wanted to understand more about how people run businesses why they make certain decisions.”
Saurabh says his solution based on solutions and attention to the details required in his current role has helped in his studies. The MBA curriculum also looks at developing technologies and how to exploit them in the business strategy – its background of technology means that it already has a strong basis of knowledge of these technologies and it.
What professional developments have you earned from MBA so far?
Saurabh has found the study of extremely useful accounting, especially how he can apply what he learns in real -life scenarios. “Now I think of the whole cost of a project, not just the solution it brings, I understand about the strategy, integration and roi.”
Mi Jung believes that her ability to think logically and clearly and determine what to do has been useful, such as the skills facing the clients she developed in her career in law.
Mi Jung, right, with other students
Team -based projects and teamwork are often intertwined even though courses, which Mi Jung and Saurabh think they have helped them nurture the softer leadership skills and work well with people of different cultural backgrounds. With the HCU group coming from different cultural and professional backgrounds, the program gives students a global perspective and opportunities to learn about international business practices and flourish in teamwork and business functions.
For what further developments are you hoping for from the program?
HKU offers songs in London, New York City and Shanghai in full -time program: For students who go to New York, they can spend a semester in the city taking elective courses at Columbia Business School. Mi Jung is ready to make a three-month exchange there and is excited to enroll in the course of managerial negotiations. “I have experience of legal negotiations, but I look forward to learning about different perspectives.”
For Saurabh, who enrolled in the ways of part -time study, he hopes to continue his strategy skills and is already using what he has learned so far in his work. “I am no longer just focused on providing solutions, but now I consider different opportunities based on income, the number of users, what kind of expenses will be suffered.” He hopes that a sense of planning, costs, resource management will bring him higher roles, perhaps one day leading to a position like CTO.

How do you feel your studies are expanding your future career and options?
Among the students in the Saurabh program are people from the world of banking and transport, an area that would never have thought before. “Talking to a member of my group I understand that it would have the potential for me to go to transportation, because I can solve many technological problems that the industry is facing. What I have learned is that companies in any industry need people who can use technological progress – banks, finances, even retail.
After MBA, Mi Jung would like to work as an internal lawyer or with an advisory firm M&A (Mergers & Acquisitions) in order to eventually assume a C-suite role in the long run.
